Greece, a country steeped in history, culture, and breathtaking landscapes, offers an unforgettable travel experience. From the ancient ruins of Athens to the idyllic beaches of Mykonos, the charm of the Cyclades, the lush greenery of Corfu, and the historical depth of the Peloponnese, Greece has something for every traveler. It is one of my favorite countries in Europe for early summer vacation, before the crowd of tourists invade the country.
I was indeed captivated by Greece from a young age. My first trip to Greece was indeed at the age of nine when I was warmly welcomed by a Greek family in Corinth. That experience allowed me to explore legendary archaeological sites like Mycenae and Delphi at an early age. I then later studied Ancient Greek in school and continued visiting Greece throughout the years. Eventually, I built a house in Corfu, where I return every year. This deep connection to Greece, both past and present, makes my Greek travel guide a firsthand account from someone truly passionate about Greek culture and history. Athens, the capital of Greece, is a city where the past and present seamlessly blend. As the birthplace of democracy and Western philosophy, Athens is home to some of the world’s most significant historical sites.
Athens also offers a lively food scene, from traditional souvlaki and moussaka to modern fusion cuisine. A visit to a rooftop bar with a view of the Acropolis at night is the perfect way to end a day in the city.
The Cyclades, a stunning group of islands in the Aegean Sea, are known for their white-washed houses, blue-domed churches, and crystal-clear waters. Among them, Mykonos stands out as a luxurious and vibrant destination.
Beyond Mykonos, the Cyclades are filled with hidden gems. Santorini is renowned for its dramatic caldera views and romantic atmosphere, while Paros and Naxos offer beautiful beaches and a more laid-back ambiance. Island hopping through the Cyclades is an excellent way to experience Greece’s diverse landscapes.
Located in the Ionian Sea, Corfu is distinct from the Cyclades due to its lush greenery, Venetian influence, and stunning coastline. It is a haven for both relaxation and exploration.
Corfu is also known for its delicious cuisine, with influences from Italy and the Mediterranean. Dishes like pastitsada (braised beef with pasta) and sofrito (veal in garlic sauce) are local favorites.
The Peloponnese, a peninsula in southern Greece, is a treasure trove of history, myth, and natural beauty. It is home to some of the most significant archaeological sites and scenic landscapes in the country.
The Peloponnese is also home to some of Greece’s best wineries and offers excellent opportunities for outdoor activities like hiking, kayaking, and exploring caves.
