Choosing where to stay in Paris can significantly impact your experience. The city offers a wide range of neighborhoods, each with its charm and character. Travelers on a budget might consider Bastille or Canal Saint-Martin, where trendy cafés and a lively ambiance make for a great stay.

But if you prefer a more local and authentic atmosphere, Montorgueil (2nd arrondissement) is a fantastic option. It offers pedestrian streets, excellent restaurants, and a true Parisian vibe. Montorgueil is indeed my favorite area in Paris.

Why Montorgueil Is the Best Place to Stay in Paris

Montorgueil is one of the most charming and centrally located areas in Paris. In this pedestrian district, where you’ll find delightful traditional bakeries, fromageries, and cozy restaurants that truly capture the Parisian spirit! It’s lively enough to feel vibrant, but not so busy that it becomes overwhelming, making it a fantastic place to base yourself while exploring the city. You’ll be just a stroll away from iconic spots like the Louvre, Notre Dame, and Le Marais. Plus, getting around is a breeze with easy metro access and direct connections to both Charles de Gaulle and Orly airports. Whether you’re in town for a quick getaway or a longer adventure, Montorgueil offers the perfect blend of authenticity, convenience, and charm that you’ll absolutely love!

No trip to Paris is complete without exploring its world-famous landmarks.

Iconic Landmarks

The Eiffel Tower

The Eiffel Tower is the most iconic monument in Paris. I first visited the Eiffel Tower as a child, but I still return from time to time when friends visit me in Paris. And watching it sparkle at night—for five minutes every hour on the hour—never loses its magic. It’s such an amazing sight that never fails to remind me just how special this landmark is! Whether you’re admiring it from the Champ de Mars or taking a trip to the top, it’s a must-see. The views of the city from the observation decks are simply unforgettable—such a fun experience!

The most enjoyable times to visit are in the early morning or late evening when the crowds are smaller. Another solution to avoid long lines is to book your tickets online or choose a guided tour with priority access. But for a more adventurous approach, challenge yourself by climbing the 327 steps to the first floor, followed by 347 more to the second! Alternatively, for a luxurious experience, reserve a table at Le Jules Verne, the renowned two-star restaurant on the second floor, where you can enjoy gourmet cuisine with breathtaking views.

Notre-Dame Cathedral

Notre-Dame Cathedral remains one of Paris’ most iconic landmarks, standing resilient after the devastating 2019 fire. I think every French person remembers exactly where they were when the fire started. I was myself in Corfu, watching the coverage on TV as the fire progressed. That’s why it was such a relief when the first phase of its restoration was completed in December 2024.

Visitors can once again explore this amazing architectural gem. If you don’t mind a bit of a wait, the entrance line can be pretty long. But attending a mass is a fantastic way to skip the queue and enjoy the beauty inside. Before you head in, take a moment to really soak in the stunning Gothic façade, the intricate sculptures, and those famous gargoyles! For a truly breathtaking view, be sure to stop by Square Jean XXIII. While you’re in the area, don’t miss out on the nearby Sainte-Chapelle, and feel free to wander through Île de la Cité to really soak up the charm of medieval Paris!

Champs-Élysées & Arc de Triomphe

The Champs-Élysées is Paris’ most famous avenue, stretching from Place de la Concorde to the Arc de Triomphe. The first section of the avenue, from Place de la Concorde to the Rond-Point des Champs-Élysées, is very green, featuring gardens on both sides. On the right, we will walk past the American Embassy, the British Embassy, and the Palais de l’Élysée, where the French president resides. On the left side, you will find the Petit Palais and the Grand Palais. From the Rond-Point to the Arc de Triomphe, both sides of the avenue are lined with luxury boutiques, charming cafés, and iconic flagship stores.

Make sure also to visit the Arc de Triomphe at the western end of the avenue. The views from the rooftop are simply amazing! The avenue comes alive in the evening with lights, making it an unforgettable stroll, especially during the festive season when it glows with holiday decorations.

Top museums to visit in Paris

The Louvre Museum

The Louvre Museum is an incredible place to explore. It’s not just the world’s largest art museum, it’s also the most visited! With over 35,000 masterpieces on display, you’ll find famous works like the Mona Lisa, the Venus de Milo, and the stunning Winged Victory of Samothrace. Once a royal palace, its beautiful architecture combines rich history with amazing art, making it a must-see for any traveler. You won’t want to miss it! The Louvre Pyramid, a striking glass and metal structure designed by Pei, serves as the museum’s iconic entrance. However, to avoid the long entrance lines, book tickets online. You may also use the Porte des Lions or Carrousel du Louvre entrances instead of the main pyramid entrance.

When I was a kid, Sunday mornings were all about the Louvre for me! I was absolutely fascinated by the Egyptian and Greek antiquities sections. And honestly, they’re still my favorite parts of the museum today. The Louvre is filled with so many amazing works of art that it can be a bit overwhelming. That’s why I always recommend planning ahead and picking out which sections you want to check out before your visit. It makes the experience so much more enjoyable!

Musée d’Orsay

If you’re a fan of art, the Musée d’Orsay is a fantastic place to check out! This beautiful museum is set in a former railway station, which gives it a unique charm. You’ll find an incredible collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist masterpieces here, with stunning works by artists like Monet, Van Gogh, Renoir, and Degas. The architecture is just as impressive, featuring huge clock windows that look out over the Seine. Make sure to explore the upper floors too. They offer amazing views of Paris that perfectly complement the wonderful art on display.

Centre Pompidou

The Centre Pompidou is such a fun and vibrant spot in Paris! With its eye-catching architecture and amazing collection of modern art, it’s a must-visit for anyone who loves creativity. You can find incredible works by artists like Picasso, Kandinsky, and Duchamp there. Plus, don’t miss the rooftop terrace – the views of the city are absolutely breathtaking!

If you’re planning a trip, just keep in mind that the museum will be closing for some big renovations starting in mid-2025 and will stay closed for about five years. So now’s the perfect time to check out its fabulous exhibitions, spacious library, and the lively atmosphere in the surrounding area. The Place Georges Pompidou is especially fun, with street performers and artists adding a splash of life to the scene.
