The city is dominated by two imposing Venetian fortresses, but its true charm lies in its narrow alleyways, elegant squares and French-inspired arcades, where you can linger over a coffee in the sun. Don’t miss the Palace of Saints Michael and George, or a stroll along the Liston Esplanade.

Achilleion: Visiting Empress Sisi’s Palace in Corfu

Just a few kilometres from the city, discover the Achilleion — a magnificent neoclassical palace built by Empress Elisabeth of Austria, known as Sisi, in homage to the Greek hero Achilles. The terraced gardens offer stunning views over the sea, and several rooms on the ground floor remain open to visitors.

🎭 Good to know: the museum is currently under restoration. Only the Imperial Gardens and outdoor areas are open to the public.

Porto Timoni: Corfu’s Most Beautiful Beach

Located near Afionas, the double cove of Porto Timoni is arguably one of the most spectacular landscapes on the entire island. You can reach it on foot via a 20-minute hike down to the cliff, or by boat from Agios Georgios just opposite.

💧 Make sure to bring water, a hat and sturdy shoes — the climb back up is steep, but the reward is absolutely worth it.

The place is wonderfully peaceful, and the scenery is simply breathtaking. You can choose between two distinct beaches, each with its own cove and atmosphere.

Paleokastritsa: Unmissable Beaches and Coves

Just 25 km from Corfu Town, Paleokastritsa enchants with its emerald-green bays, sea caves and lively atmosphere. Rent a small boat to explore the surrounding coves at your own pace, or make your way to Paradise Beach — only accessible by sea.

Choosing where to stay in Corfu depends largely on your travel style. The island is large, and each area offers a completely different atmosphere.

Corfu Town — Best for Culture and City Life

The historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with charming alleyways, excellent restaurants and the island’s main landmarks all within easy walking distance. A great base if you want to explore the cultural side of Corfu.

When to Visit Corfu: The Best Time to Go

The tourist season in Corfu runs from Orthodox Easter (April) through to the end of October.

Spring (April–May)

Lush green landscapes, a peaceful atmosphere and ideal temperatures for hiking and sightseeing. The island is just waking up — crowds are thin and the countryside is at its most beautiful.

Summer (June–August)

Peak season, with warm water, lively beaches, festivals and long sunny days. Book accommodation well in advance as the most popular spots fill up quickly.

September–October

My personal favourite time to visit: the sea is still warm, there are far fewer tourists and prices drop across the board — villas, restaurants and car hire all come in cheaper.

💧 Local tip: the sea on the east coast stays very pleasant well into mid-November, as the water between Corfu and Albania is relatively shallow. I’ve even swum there as late as mid-December in some years!

How to Get to Corfu: By Plane or Ferry

You have two main options to get to Corfu. By air or by sea.

✈️ Flying to Corfu

During the tourist season, numerous direct flights connect Corfu to cities across Europe. Corfu International Airport (Ioannis Kapodistrias) is located right next to Corfu Town, making arrivals quick and easy.

• ✈️ From France: Transavia launches flights from 3 April 2025
• ✈️ From Amsterdam: Flights available from late April
• ✈️ From London: easyJet operates direct flights from late March
• ✈️ From Milan: Direct connections from June

👉 Most airlines start their Corfu routes from late March or early April, coinciding with the start of the tourist season and Orthodox Easter.

⛴️ Getting to Corfu by Ferry

If you’re travelling with your car or planning a road trip through Greece or Italy, you can reach Corfu by ferry from several ports:

• 🇦🇱 Saranda (Albania) — a short, scenic crossing
• 🇬🇷 Igoumenitsa (mainland Greece) — frequent departures, the most common option
• 🇮🇹 Venice, Ancona, Bari (Italy) — ideal if you’re combining Corfu with an Italian road trip

Getting Around Corfu: Renting a Car

Exploring Corfu independently is the key to getting the most out of the island. With winding mountain roads, isolated villages and beaches that can be tricky to reach, renting a car is by far the most practical option.

Public buses do exist, but they don’t provide easy access to many of Corfu’s most beautiful spots. Taxis, on the other hand, are expensive and not always available outside the main towns.
