Labuan Bajo & Komodo National Park – Complete Travel Guide (2026)
Labuan Bajo, located on the western tip of Flores Island, is the gateway to one of Indonesia’s most extraordinary natural treasures: Komodo National Park. Famous for Komodo dragons, world-class diving, dramatic island viewpoints, and pink beaches, this region has become one of the most spectacular destinations in Southeast Asia.
Based in Indonesia since 2020, I’ve visited Labuan Bajo multiple times and completed numerous dives across North, Central, and South Komodo. The landscapes above water are stunning — but the marine life below the surface is just as unforgettable.
This complete guide covers what to do in Labuan Bajo, how to visit Komodo National Park, best dive sites, itinerary ideas, where to stay, and practical travel tips for 2026.

Labuan Bajo Travel Guide – Is It Worth Visiting?
Yes — but not for the city itself.
Labuan Bajo is primarily a launch point for Komodo National Park. The town has grown rapidly in recent years, with new hotels, restaurants, and a modernized marina. While it’s not the most beautiful city in Indonesia, it offers:
- Easy access to Komodo boat trips
- Diving centers and liveaboards
- Sunset viewpoints
- Good restaurant options
- Direct flights from Bali and Jakarta
Most travelers stay 1–2 nights before or after a Komodo boat tour.
Komodo National Park – What Makes It Unique?
Komodo National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site created in 1980 to protect the Komodo dragon and its surrounding marine ecosystem.
What makes it exceptional:
- The only place on Earth to see Komodo dragons in the wild
- One of the richest marine ecosystems in the world
- Over 40 dive sites
- Strong nutrient-rich currents attracting large pelagic species
- Dramatic island landscapes and panoramic viewpoints
It combines wildlife, adventure, and elite-level diving in one destination.
Komodo Dragons – Where & How to See Them
Komodo dragons (Varanus komodoensis) are the largest lizards on Earth, reaching up to 3 meters (10 feet) in length.
You can see them on:
- Komodo Island
- Rinca Island
Visits are only allowed with certified park rangers. Dragons are powerful predators with venomous bites and unpredictable behavior, so guided walks are mandatory.
The best sightings are usually during the dry season when dragons are more active.

Diving in Komodo – One of the Best in the World
Komodo is consistently ranked among the top diving destinations in Southeast Asia.
What makes it special?
- Strong currents = incredible biodiversity
- Manta ray cleaning stations
- Reef sharks, giant trevallies, barracudas
- Healthy coral reefs
- Macro and big pelagics on the same dive
You can dive from Labuan Bajo (day trips) or via multi-day liveaboards.

Best Dive Sites in Komodo
Having dived extensively across North, Central and South Komodo, I can confidently say that conditions vary dramatically depending on currents, tides, and season. Choosing an experienced dive operator is essential.
North Komodo (More Exposed, Stronger Currents)
- Castle Rock – Sharks, giant trevallies, tuna
- Crystal Rock – Reef sharks and schooling fish
- The Cauldron (Shotgun) – Exhilarating drift dive
Best for experienced divers.
Central Komodo (Accessible & Balanced)
- Batu Bolong – Spectacular coral and marine life density
- Mawan – Manta encounters
- Tatawa Besar – Beautiful drift dive
Suitable for advanced open water divers.
South Komodo (Colder, Plankton-Rich Waters)
- Manta Alley – Large manta aggregations
- Unique colder currents
- Rich macro life
Best conditions typically from December to March.

Best Islands to Visit in Komodo
In addition to diving and discovering Komodo dragons, the park offers other unforgettable experiences:
Padar Island
The most iconic viewpoint in Komodo. A short but steep hike leads to a panoramic view of three crescent beaches — white, black, and pink sand.

Rinca Island
Rinca is another island where it is possible to encounter Komodo dragons, often more easily accessible than on Komodo Island. It also offers beautiful hiking opportunities with arid and wild landscapes.
Pink Beach
One of the most famous beaches in the region, Pink Beach owes its color to tiny fragments of red coral mixed with white sand. This is an ideal place to enjoy a beautiful beach and relax. This beach was voted the 7th most beautiful beach in the world in 2024 by The World’s 50 Best Beaches.

Kalong Flying Foxes
Kalong Island, in Komodo National Park, is famous for its incredible spectacle of giant bats, called flying foxes. Every evening at sunset, thousands of these bats leave the island’s mangroves to look for food on neighboring islands. This magical moment, when the sky fills with black silhouettes flying in sync, attracts many visitors. Accessible by boat from Labuan Bajo, the observation of flying foxes is often combined with a sunset excursion.

Hidden Bays and Deserted Islets
Many small bays and uninhabited islands offer quiet spots for swimming, picnicking or just enjoying the peace and quiet away from the crowds.

Best Things to Do in Labuan Bajo (Besides Komodo)
Visit the Marina & Harbor Area
The renovated marina is the starting point for all Komodo boat tours and liveaboards. Walking along the harbor gives you a clear sense of the region’s transformation into a high-end tourism hub.

Walk on the main street
There is actually only one street in Labuan Bajo that forms a kind of loop. On the lower part, at the port level you will find most of the diving centers. On the upper part some restaurants and hotels have a beautiful view of the bay for the sunset.
Sunset at Bukit Sylvia
This hill offers a spectacular panoramic view of Labuan Bajo and the surrounding islands, especially at sunset.
Batu Cermin Caves
A few kilometers from the city, this cave is home to stalactites, bats, and a unique play of light when the sun penetrates through a crack.

Rangko Caves
A little further, Goa Rangko is a hidden cave housing a natural saltwater pool. The cave is accessible by boat from the village of Tanjung Boleng. For 2 people a private boat will cost 250 kIDR per person. The boat trip lasts 20 minutes. You will be asked to pay 50 kIDR for the entrance ticket to the cave. A small path then takes you in 5 minutes to the cave entrance. Swimming in the natural pool inside the cave is very nice. Even more in the afternoon when the sun illuminates the cave.
