Koka Beach, located on the northeast coast of the island of Flores in Indonesia, is a true tropical pearl. This pristine beach is nestled near the village of Wolowiro, far from the hustle and bustle of more popular tourist destinations. So go and visit Koka Beach, you will not be disappointed by its exceptional natural beauty and serenity. It is a relaxing stopover about halfway between Maumere and Kelimutu. You can for example decide to stop there for lunch or a refreshing swim. Or if you have time and want to make the most of it, spend a night in one of the small bungalows run by Blasius and his family.
The double beach of Koka Beach
The sand of the beach is caressed by the crystal clear turquoise waters of the Savu Sea, creating a landscape worthy of a postcard. What makes Koka Beach even more unique is its double beach configuration, separated by a small hill. The two beaches offer different experiences, mainly related to the color of the water. One has deep blue water while the other is light blue, creating an amazing visual contrast. It reminded me of the double beach of Porto Timoni in Corfu!
It is easy to climb the small hill. And from there you will have a very beautiful view of the two bays and the two beaches. If you spend some time you can also ask Blasius to rent you a canoe to go explore the nearby beaches. Some more adventurous tourists also sometimes settle down for a few days to camp on a deserted beach only accessible by canoe…
But you can also just relax on the beach and watch the fishermen. They remain in a fragile balance on their small pirogue, their head and arms in the water on one side of the pirogue and their second leg on the other side to balance.
Lunch at Koka Beach
Blasius will be happy to prepare a lunch for you based on local products, including super fresh fish. On weekends you will see many families who come to cook their own fish on makeshift barbecues. All the families enjoy the beach which becomes more lively!
Sleep at Koka Beach
Blasius has built a few bungalows on the beach. The comfort is basic but you will have the privilege of having the two beaches all to yourself as soon as you wake up! There are also two small homestays on the main road but I have not tried them.
How to get to Koka Beach
Koka Beach is less than an hour and a half drive from Maumere to the east and Kelimutu to the west. The beach is less than 2 kilometers from the main road. Getting there is really not a big detour and it would be a shame to pass by without stopping! You will leave the main road at the village of Wolowiro to take a small dirt road, rather bumpy. Because the road is private, you will have to pay around 20,000 rupees. You will then cross a forest of cocoa trees (or cacao trees) which gave their name to the beach. The opportunity to taste a cocoa bean before it is transformed into cocoa and then chocolate!
