Porto Timoni is one of the most spectacular beaches in Corfu, famous for its twin bay and crystal-clear waters. Located near the village of Afionas, it offers one of the most iconic landscapes on the island.

I have been visiting Corfu for many years and have hiked down to Porto Timoni dozens of times across different seasons, ever since I built my home on the island in 2013. That experience lets me share concrete, up-to-date advice to help you plan the perfect visit.

Where Porto Timoni Is Located

Porto Timoni lies on the north-western coast of Corfu, Greece, next to the picturesque village of Afionas. Its secluded position — reachable only on foot or from the sea — has kept these two coves almost untouched: no roads, no beach clubs, only Mediterranean scrub, cliffs and a turquoise sea that takes your breath away.

From Corfu Town it’s about 40 km by car (just over an hour’s drive), while from the nearby beach of Agios Georgios Pagi you’re only a few minutes away by boat.

The Twin Beaches of Porto Timoni

The most striking feature of Porto Timoni is its twin beaches: two distinct bays separated by a narrow strip of land just a few meters wide, which you can cross in seconds. One side faces south, the other north, offering two completely different swimming experiences in a single spot.

The beach facing Agios Georgios is the more popular of the two. Golden sand mixed with small pebbles, turquoise water and a gently shelving seabed make this sheltered bay ideal for swimming, snorkeling and sunbathing. The water clarity is perfect for exploring the underwater world with mask and snorkel.

The second beach, on the opposite side, is the real hidden gem: usually quieter, with larger pebbles and surrounded by lush vegetation. Waves are generally light and the atmosphere even more peaceful — perfect for travelers looking for a wild corner to unwind far from the crowds.

How to Get to Porto Timoni

There are two ways to reach Porto Timoni: on foot from the village of Afionas, or by boat from Agios Georgios Pagi. Both options are charming, but personally I recommend arriving by land because it lets you also discover Afionas and its stunning views.

On Foot from Afionas

Afionas is a delightful village with white-washed lanes, flower-filled gardens and a panoramic view of the twin bay that ranks among the most photographed in Corfu. It’s the ideal starting point for the walk down to Porto Timoni. The trail begins at the upper edge of the village near Taverna Anemos — a great spot for coffee or lunch before (or after!) the descent. The taverna offers private parking for its guests, especially valuable in high season when finding a space in the village can be tricky.

The descent takes about 20 minutes along a wide, well-marked, partly shaded trail. Two viewpoints along the way offer the classic top-down photo of the double bay: in peak season a small queue can form for the shot, so for a quieter experience head out early in the morning or in the late afternoon.

💡 Practical tip: the path is safe but has a few stony stretches. Hiking shoes or sneakers are ideal, although flip-flops can work if you watch your step. In high season you can even ride a donkey back up for a few euros — a folkloric experience that spares you the climb under the sun.

By Boat from Agios Georgios Pagi

From Agios Georgios Pagi, the closest beach, you have three options to reach Porto Timoni by sea:

  • Taxi-boat: the simplest and fastest solution. The crossing takes around 5 minutes and costs about €10 per person (indicative 2026 prices). Important: agree your return time with the boatman straight away.
  • Daily boat rental: ideal if you also want to explore the other bays of the north-western coast. The cost is around €140 per day, and no boating license is required for smaller boats.
  • Pedal boat: the most active and fun option. Following the coast, you’ll reach Porto Timoni in about 30–40 minutes, with the chance to stop for a swim along the way.

Things to Do at Porto Timoni

Once you arrive, the first decision is choosing which beach to settle on. Personally I prefer the one facing Agios Georgios: it’s less windy and offers a more open view of the coast. The second bay, on the other hand, is perfect on days with strong southerly winds.

Here are the must-do experiences on the twin beach:

  • Swim and snorkel: the water is crystal clear on both sides. Bring a mask and snorkel to explore the rocky seabeds rich with fish, especially close to the side rocks.
  • Swim out to the central rock in front of the main beach: a short swim rewarded with a unique perspective.
  • Cross the strip of land between the two bays: just a few steps take you from one sea to the other — an experience you can live in only a handful of places in the world.
  • Take panoramic photos from the high points of the trail, especially at sunset.
  • Relax: read, nap in the shade of a few bushes, enjoy the silence. Porto Timoni has no beach clubs, sunbeds or bars: it’s pure nature.

When to Visit Porto Timoni

The best time to visit Porto Timoni is from May to October, when the sea is warm and the trail can be hiked safely.

  • May and June: pleasant temperatures, lush vegetation, few people. My favorite time of year.
  • July and August: high season, beautiful sea but more crowded and parking in Afionas is tricky. Aim to arrive before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m.
  • September and early October: warm water, relaxed atmosphere, lower prices. An excellent compromise.

From November to April the area is virtually deserted, some tavernas are closed and the trail can become muddy after rain.

What to Bring to the Beach

Porto Timoni is a wild, unserviced beach: you won’t find bars, sunbeds, umbrella rentals or natural shade. To enjoy it at its best, pack:

  • Plenty of water (at least 1.5 L per person)
  • High-protection sunscreen
  • Hat and sunglasses
  • A lightweight beach umbrella or large towel for shade
  • Beach towel (microfiber saves space)
  • A small foam mat, since the beaches are mostly pebbly
  • Mask, snorkel and water shoes for snorkeling
  • A few snacks: there are no kiosks
  • A bag to take your trash back with you and keep the place pristine

💡 Good news for the climb back: your backpack will be much lighter on the way up — you’ll probably have drunk all your water!
