Victoria Peak at Sunset: Our Afternoon, Hour by Hour
By Blaise Jaeger · Updated October 21, 2026
Victoria Peak is the classic view of Hong Kong: the towers of Central at your feet, Victoria Harbour, and Kowloon behind it. Most visitors go up, take a photo and come back down. Our advice is the opposite: go up in mid-afternoon and stay until night, to see the same view by day, at sunset and lit up. That is what we did on Monday, October 19, 2026, the last full day of our 5 days in Hong Kong. It was a public holiday, and the Peak was packed. Here is how it went, hour by hour, and how to avoid the lines.

Getting to the Peak: the Peak Tram
The Lower Terminus on Garden Road
The Peak Tram leaves from its lower terminus on Garden Road in Central, a 15-minute walk from Admiralty or Central MTR stations. We took a taxi from our hotel in Admiralty for HK$30. Bus 15 and green minibus 1 also go up to the Peak, but the tram is half the experience. More on taxis and fares in our guide to getting around Hong Kong.

Fast-Track Ticket: Worth It on a Holiday
The line for regular tickets wound through the terminus. With our Klook fast-track ticket, we went straight to the boarding line. We still waited about 20 minutes, because the previous tram had just left, but it put us at the front for the next one, with the best seats. Take the round-trip Peak Tram and Sky Terrace 428 package: the fast track also works on the way down.

| Ticket (adult) | Price |
|---|---|
| Peak Tram round trip, weekday | HK$88 |
| Peak Tram round trip, weekend and public holiday | HK$108 |
| Sky Pass: round trip and Sky Terrace 428 | HK$158 |
| Klook fast-track combo | Price varies with the package; check on Klook |
Klook also sells a package with Madame Tussauds, the wax museum in the Peak Tower. We skipped it: we had visited the one in Singapore, where most of the figures were regional celebrities we did not recognize. A few figures stand outside the entrance anyway, for a free photo.

The Ride Up
The current trams, introduced in 2022, carry about 210 passengers and climb the hill in under ten minutes, so steeply that the towers of Mid-Levels seem to lean. Sit on the right-hand side going up for the view over the city.

At the Top: the Peak Tower
The tram arrives inside the Peak Tower, a shopping and restaurant complex with the Sky Terrace 428 on its roof. Before going up, we walked around to see the view in daylight. In mid-afternoon the light is behind the city, which makes for clear, sharp photos.

Free Photo Spaces
Inside the Peak Tower, a free area is set up for fun photos: an old tram, a mirror room, a plane in flight. The most elaborate sets are reserved for professional photographers who sell you the picture, but the rest is free and a good way to pass half an hour.
Cocktails at Bubba Gump
To wait for the sunset, we sat at Bubba Gump, the American shrimp restaurant in the Peak Tower, at a table by the window. Two cocktails, very generously poured, at HK$141 each. Not cheap, but the view from the window is the same as from the terrace, and you are sitting down.

Sky Terrace 428: Sunset and City Lights
Arrive by 5:00 PM
The Sky Terrace 428, named after its altitude in meters, is the highest viewing platform at the Peak. We went up at 5:00 PM, about an hour before sunset in October. It was the right time: there was still room along the railing, and the terrace filled up quickly after that.

Golden Hour and Sunset
From 5:15 PM the light turns golden on the towers of Central and the IFC. The terrace faces the harbor, north, while the sun sets to the west: you watch the sky and the towers change color rather than the sun going down over the city. Around 6:00 PM, everyone on the terrace raised their phones towards the west.

Blue Hour and Night
Do not leave after the sunset: the best moment comes 15 to 30 minutes later, when the sky is still blue and the towers light up one by one. By 6:20 PM the city was fully lit. That is also when the terrace is most crowded.

Coming Down
We took the tram down just before 7:00 PM. With the fast-track ticket, we did not wait long. Without one, signs in the Peak Tower show a QR code to join the Easy Queue system for the way down. The night ride down, with the lit towers sliding past the windows, is a show of its own.

Our Tips for Victoria Peak
- Go up around 3:00 PM and stay until 6:30 PM: day, sunset and night in one visit.
- Buy the round-trip fast-track ticket with Sky Terrace 428, especially on weekends and public holidays.
- Be on the Sky Terrace by 5:00 PM in October; about an hour before sunset in other seasons.
- Stay 30 minutes after sunset for the city lights.
- Sit on the right-hand side of the tram going up.
- Skip Madame Tussauds unless you are a fan; the free photo spaces are fun enough.
FAQ: Victoria Peak
When is the best time to visit Victoria Peak?
Late afternoon. Arrive around 3:00 PM, be on the Sky Terrace about an hour before sunset, and stay until the city lights are on. You get the three views in one visit.
Is the Peak Tram fast-track ticket worth it?
On weekends and public holidays, yes. The regular line on the day we went wound through the whole terminus. With a fast-track ticket, we only waited for the next tram.
Is Sky Terrace 428 worth it?
For sunset, yes: it is the highest platform and the view is unobstructed. By day, the free viewpoints around the Peak Tower and the Peak Galleria are almost as good.
How long should I spend at Victoria Peak?
Three to four hours if you want daylight, sunset and night. One hour is enough for a quick look by day.
Can I go up without the Peak Tram?
Yes, by taxi, bus 15 or green minibus 1, which avoids the tram lines entirely. But the tram ride is part of the experience.
